Washington-LeadingAge's Center for Aging Services Technologies (CAST) today released 2 new resources designed to help long-term and post-acute care (LTPAC) organizations identify and select telehealth products:

Telehealth, which includes RPM, is the delivery of health-related services and information via telecommunications technologies. The online selection tool is an easy-to-use resource that guides users through the process of selecting telehealth and RPM products that meet their needs based on a variety of criteria.

The online tool contains 22 products from 16 vendors, offering the user options to narrow down his or her selection based on 12 major categories of functionality pulled from the Telehealth and RPM Selection Matrix that compares these products across more than 200 different features.

The case studies were compiled to aid LTPAC organizations, physician practices, integrated health delivery networks and others in becoming familiar with real-life examples of implementing different types of technologies available, the impacts experienced by users and potential revenue streams and business models that support these technologies.

Telehealth and RPM vendors who chose to participate in the self-review for the whitepaper were offered an opportunity to nominate a provider to write a case study on its use of the vendor's telehealth and RPM product. Six providers are included in these case studies.

The 2 resources released today complete CAST's new telehealth portfolio, which also includes:

Now complete, the telehealth portfolio exists as a companion to CAST's electronic health record (EHR) selection and implementation portfolio.

"The online selection tool we produced makes it so easy for providers interested in selecting and implementing telehealth or RPM solutions to identify a short-list of products that meet business line and basic needs," said Majd Alwan, Ph.D., LeadingAge senior vice president for technology and executive director of CAST. "The case studies highlight how providers went about implementing these technologies, the impacts they experienced, lessons they learned and pitfalls to avoid."

CAST is planning to update this portfolio in 2014 and is currently seeking additional vendors to participate in next year's edition of the Selection Matrix, online Selection Tool, and case studies.

"Telehealth is an important enabler of innovative future-ready business models," says Larry Minnix, president and CEO of LeadingAge. "The case studies and the online selection tool will be invaluable to providers who are considering embarking on telehealth to reduce hospital readmissions or other health reform related initiatives.
