    A new framework developed at the University of Maryland could foster the development of sustainable health information exchanges (HIE). The framework, developed by the university’s Center for Health Information and Decision Systems, includes a methodology for assessing any HIE on 5 performance measures: 

    • Value creation and sustainability of a business model.
    • Organizational structure and decision making processes.
    • Technology; community engagement.
    • Trust in the system. 
  •   Operational HIEs can use the framework to compare and benchmark their performance.
