Officials in Louisiana are on the lookout for a few big hospitals to join the newly launched Louisiana Health Information Exchange. Landing the biggest hospitals in the state will be critical to the success of the exchange, which eventually must support itself through subscription fees that are calculated as a portion of participants’ net annual patient revenue but feature guaranteed caps. The HIE must also connect as many patients as possible so providers see the advantage of joining the network.

HP Enterprise Services has been selected to create a statewide health information exchange (HIE) and e-prescribing network for the Texas Medicaid program. The web-based system will pull information from several existing databases to create a common patient health history for the state’s three million Medicaid recipients. In other news, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology has approved plans for health information exchanges in Iowa and Louisiana.
