Interested in enhancing your leadership skills and broadening your professional network to include aging services leaders from around the world? An August 2015 retreat sponsored by the International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing (IAHSA) will help.

The IAHSA Global Ageing Leadership Retreat will be held on Aug. 29-31, 2015 in Perth, Australia. The retreat takes place in conjunction with the joint conference of IAHSA and Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA), which will be held in Perth from Aug. 31 to Sept. 1

Leadership Retreat: Skill Building and Networking

The IAHSA Global Ageing Leadership Retreat is a professional development opportunity designed to:

  • Enhance your leadership skills. The 3-day program will explore the theory and practice of leadership in the context of an aging world.
  • Give you a growth and development experience. The program is designed to inspire and prepare leaders of today and tomorrow.

“We’re really excited to be able to offer this new opportunity to aging services professionals around the world,” says IAHSA Executive Director Katie Smith Sloan. “Our leadership retreat is modeled after the very successful LeadingAge Leadership Academy, which for many years has helped to enhance the leadership skills and core competencies of not-for-profit leaders within the LeadingAge membership.”

The international flavor of the IAHSA leadership retreat will also help participants broaden their professional networks to include leaders of aging services organizations in a variety of countries.

“Providers of aged care around the world, including the United States, face similar challenges as they prepare to serve a growing older population,” says Sloan. “We’re committed to providing these leaders with the skills, insights, ideas and confidence they need to tackle change and spur innovation. We’re also eager to help those leaders acquire a global peer network that will support them after the retreat is over.”

The retreat registration will be capped at 24 participants to maximize the experience of all participants, says Sloan.

Program Overview

Kay Kallander will lead the IAHSA Global Ageing Leadership Retreat. Kallander has 30 years of experience in health care and aging issues, having served as a director of nursing, executive director of a continuing care retirement community, and member of the leadership team of a large and diverse multisite organization.

In addition, Kallander served as the Lead and Coach Emeritus for the LeadingAge Leadership Academy. She developed and facilitated EMERGE California, an intensive, cohort-based, 7-month leadership training program, and Leadership ABHOW, a program that provides ABHOW employees with the leadership skills they need to implement the company’s mission and best practices.

These programs serve as models for developing professionals in the field of aging services, says Sloan.

The leadership retreat will include a variety of learning and networking experiences, including:

  • Learning sessions facilitated by Kallander.
  • Conversations with visionary leaders in the field of aging services.
  • Site visits to innovative organizations.
  • Teamwork.
  • Readings.
  • Films.
  • Participatory discussions enriched by participants’ diverse perspectives.
